An extremely stylish update of Shakespeare's arguably bloodiest play. Hopkins plays Titus Andronicus, a victorious general returning from war who engages in a bloody feud with Tamora (Lange) - the wife of the emperor Saturnius (Cumming). Remaining faithful to Shakespeare's original text while transporting the action to a strange netherworld context, Taymor presents a vision of the bard that is more in tune with a modern day horror than any tights 'n' wigs version of yore. Things may fall slightly flat towards the end due to the director's insistence on juxtaposing modern day atrocities with the savagery of Shakespeare, but it's a minor gripe.
