The Sweetest Thing

The Sweetest Thing

  • Rating: The Sweetest Thing rated 1
  • Director:
  • Starring: Cameron Diaz
  • Details: US / 90 mins / (18).

Diaz plays Christina, a 28-year-old party girl who, despite having her pick of men, can't commit to a single guy. Along with her flatmates, Courtney (Applegate) and Jane (Blair), she prowls the clubs of San Francisco, looking for no strings attached fun. When she encounters the self assured, confident Peter (Jane), Christina is unprepared for the impact he has on her. So much so, that she, along with Courtney, sets out to track him down at an upstate wedding.
A cheap, terrible riff on the gross out antics of the Farrelly brothers, The Sweetest Thing is a film which is virtually devoid of intelligence, humour or real creativity. A feeble attempt at an exclusively female bad taste gross out film, The Sweetest Thing labours along at a cumbersome pace, lacking the sparkle and wit of its inspirations. Indeed, it wants to be There's Something About Mary so much that the director and his writer have forgotten about the fundamentals of comedy filmmaking. About the only redeeming features of The Sweetest Thing is that for a few minutes of the film, Cameron Diaz cavorts around in her underwear, and also sings a song about penises. And even that's not even half as good as it sounds on paper.
