The Affair of the Necklace

The Affair of the Necklace

  • Rating: The Affair of the Necklace rated 2
  • Director: Charles Shyer.
  • Starring: Hilary Swank, Jonathan Pryce, Simon Baker, Adrien Brody, Brian Cox, Christopher Walken.
  • Details: US / 118 mins / (15PG).

Period drama ensemble piece set in pre revolutionary France in which Hilary Swank plays Comtesse Jeanne de la Motte-Valois, an aristocratic woman left penniless by conniving peers. Deciding to avenge her and her family's fall, she sets out to steal a priceless necklace. While The Affair of the Necklace is a reasonably interesting story, it lacks a certain narrative thrust. In short, there's precious little going here that isn't explained in painstaking detail by the characters and the laboured voice-over. Everyone involved does themselves justice - especially the cameo players - but the whole affair (sorry) has about as much movement as a narcoleptic elephant.
