Based on the Frank Capra classic, Mr Deeds Goes to Town (1936), which starred Gary Cooper, Mr Deeds is little more than a starring vehicle for Adam Sandler to showcase his obnoxious brand of humour once again. He plays the title character, Longfellow Deeds, a light-hearted soul who runs a pizza parlour in the sleepy town of Mandrake Falls. Somehow, he inherits $40 billion from a distant relative, and goes off to Manhattan to claim what is his. It's there that Longfellow encounters an ambitious reporter (Winona 'I paid for it - honest' Ryder) and has to deal with the self-serving senior executive of the Deeds Corporation, Chuck Cedar (Peter Gallagher).
You either like Adam Sandler flicks or you find his idiotic, juvenile, and desperately pathetic brand of frat boy 'humour' to be a waste of time and andndash; test results pending - a danger to your sanity. Needless to say, Mr Deeds doesn't deviate from the formula that Sandler has milked in most of tired and lazy comedies to date. Indeed, about the only surprisingly thing about Mr Deeds is what a talented group of actors and Winona Ryder ever saw in the project andndash; aside from hefty pay cheques, of course.
