(The Taste of Others)
Castella (Bacri) is an extremely wealthy businessman who is having martial problems, thanks to his overbearing and tasteless wife. He decides to take English lessons from a part time teacher, Clara (Anne Alvaro), but soon fires her. After watching her star in a stage production, however, Castella becomes hopelessly infatuated with Clara and her bohemian lifestyle - one that is a million miles removed from his own. While Le Gout des autres is ostensibly a comedy, it's also a film-laden down with metaphors concerning the class system, taste and human interaction. Thankfully, director Jaoui makes her point subtly, without ever alienating the viewer, and ensures that the entertainment factor remains high with the excellent performances coaxed from the leading players. Sure, Les Gout des autres is a tad cumbersome in places, but it's ultimately an enjoyable experience.
