The ultra-patriarchal society of Hassidic Judaism is poignantly observed by director Gitai as two sisters (Abecassis and Barda) are manipulated at the whim of their menfolk and the traditions of their ancient religion. The pace is slow and stately, but the performances and the deceptively simple story make for riveting viewing.
