Just My Luck

Just My Luck

  • Rating: Just My Luck rated 1
  • Director: Donald Petrie.
  • Starring: Lindsay Lohan, Chris Pine, Faizon Love, McFly.
  • Details: US, 103mins, PG.

Young Manhattan socialite Ashley Albright (Lohan) is the jammiest person in the world; one of those people who once they step outside, it stops raining; if she's late for a train, the train is delayed etc. As she climbs the social and corporate ladder, lady luck polishes every rung. One night at a masquerade ball, she kisses down on his luck music manager Jake Hardin (Pine) and suddenly their fortunes are swapped. Now Ashley, a King Midas in reverse, loses her job and her apartment and must find Jake and kiss him again so her luck will return but New York is a big city. You used to have to be a movie star to get your face into Heat magazine but now it seems that if your face is in Heat magazine, you get to be a movie star. As Ashley Albright, Lohan never tries to fool the audience into thinking they're watching a character up on screen; she wants the audience to remember, at every turn, that you are watching Lindsay Lohan and she is a star. There is nothing in Just My Luck that differs from a TV movie and worse still; it feels like a sitcom subplot drawn out into feature length movie. As an episode of karmic humour, it fails; as a fantasy rom-com, it fails - there is nothing here you haven't seen before and nothing to persuade you from parting with your hard earned cash and that's what it is all about really. If you find yourself dragged along to this against your will, you can pass the time by playing a game - guess what's going to happen next. However, that game will get old pretty soon as you'll be right every single time. Just My Luck is harmless fun unless you consider forever damaging your sanity and plunging your soul into despair at the state of mainstream movies harmless.
