A likeable feel-good baseball flick, in which chemistry teacher Quaid is persuaded by his students to try out for a Major League club with predictable consequences, The Rookie is a sweet, neatly-realised slice of Hollywood confection that is aware of its limitations and acknowledges them with good grace. An extra star for honesty, then.
