When the vice-president dies, president Jeff Bridges appoints senator Joan Allen his second-in-command - much to the chagrin of senator Gary Oldman, who sets about digging into Allen's past for sexual misdemeanours. Excellent performances and an intriguing, intelligently told storyline combine for a thoughtful meditation on the abuse of power.
