Tim Burton's remake of the 1968 sci-fi classic is a dark affair in which the real stars are the set designers and make-up artists. A hugely effective visual spectacle, this film is somehow less than the sum of its parts, perhaps because the emphasis is more on how the movie looks than what its characters have to say.
