Blethyn plays the middle-aged mother of two grown-up daughters (Keener, Mortimer) and the adoptive mother of a ten-year-old black girl (Goodwin). The skewed relationships that exist between the mature women, and the way in which they project their neuroses onto the young girl, provides the narrative dynamic for an acutely observed, bittersweet drama.
