Trapped inside a burning building, Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix) reminisces about his life spent as a Baltimore firefighter while his boss, Chief Kennedy (John Travolta), frantically co-ordinates a rescue attempt. Trite in places, especially when it tries to depend too much on Jack's relationship with his wife (Jacinda Barrett), Ladder 49 is solid, unsurprising fare.
